Peridot, Birthstone of August

What is a Peridot? From the French meaning “unclear” due to the numerous ambiguities within the gemstone. It is often called the evening emerald.

Peridot is the mineral Olivine it has an olive or bottle green colour due to the presence of iron and the shade of depth and colour changes according to the amount of iron present. The deeper the green the smaller amount of iron.

Peridot is found on St John’s Island (Egypt) China, Burma, Brazil, Hawaii, Arizona, Australia , South Africa and Norway.The Crusaders brought Peridot to Europe in the Middle Ages, transporting stones from St John’s Island in the Red Sea, where it has been mined for over 3,500 years.

A symbol of fame, dignity and protection. It is seen to initiate healing in the physical body, believing to strengthen the immune system and metabolism. It is said to release emotional tensions, stress, anger and guilt and to sharpen and open the mind and dissipate lethargy, apathy and exhaustion. Some believe that the green Peridot crystals found in volcanic ashes were the tears of the volcano goddess Pele.

Peridot looks beautiful in either yellow gold or silver and adds a fresh playful colour to your wardrobe.
